Classical Education For Homeschoolers
With
classical education the philosophy is to get the
students the tools with which they can learn on their own
and then just facilitate the process and enable the student
to become independent.
Most
homeschooling parents subscribe to the philosophy that when
it comes to education, the process is not a one size fits
all assembly lines. Homeschooling and classical education
follow the thinking that each child is unique within each
unique family environment and that the parent determine the
values, the guidance, and the moral compass of the child and
what is best for your children within your family. That is
that as you read and research all of your homeschooling
options, of which there are many, remember ultimately it is
you that will learn what works best for your situation and
family.
Simply
by definition classroom schools and homeschooling function
under completely different environmental factors, and they
should. Aside from the fact that a parent is going to
interact and teach their children differently, if for no
other reason a classroom setting is a one to many
relationship between teacher and students whereas
homeschooling is much closer to one to one. With it's one to
one relationship, homeschooling allows the parent to focus
on the principles of child development and their education,
thus the homeschool classical education becomes more
that just a teaching/learning philosophy, it becomes a part
of the child's life.
As
with any homeschooling teaching methodology, there is any
number of different ways to implement classical education in
yours. How you bring order to your homeschooling environment
is certainly your call. Some parents opt to start with a
pre-planned curriculum. This can be a good choice for those
who are just starting the homeschool journey because a good
packaged curriculum will have the vast majority
of the details taken care of. Developing reading lists and
putting together your own collection of child education
materials is also an option, but is usually reserved for
those with a bit more homeschooling experience. Either way,
I think you will find that not matter the homeschooling
material used, you will have to make adjustments and adapt
it to your family's situation.
The
tendency is to feel overwhelmed at first, but don't be. All
types of parents with all types of children plan, use, and
thrive with the classical education approach and you
can too.
