When working with autism education and behavior
management techniques, it is crucial to deal with
the child in a very consistent manner.
Consistency in an
autistic child's environment has been defined as a key
aspect in managing the behavior of your autistic child.
Consistency in the child's environment not only includes
the physical and sensory objects in the child's
environment, but also how you and others interact with
the child. As a parent keep your expectations of the
child's daily tasks high, and again, keep them
consistent and certainly within their ability to perform
each task.
If you feel that a given task is causing
distress, you may want to reduce the size of the task or
the length of time focus or attention is needed to
complete the task. Be mindful that you should accomplish
this in a very innocuous fashion making sure that the
child doesn't notice or that this reduction would cause
an environmental change for them.
In terms of behavioral management for autistic children,
it's critical that you and others involved with the
autistic child deal with them in a consistent manner.
This helps the child facilitate their learned behavior
and skills across their environments.
This is why any
educational and behavioral programming has to be
consistent and used across environments. When
implementing behavioral and educational programs and
policies for the child, it is very important that all
people involved are on the same page and consistently
stick to the guidelines that have been set up. Once
determined, constant communication and journaling of the
child's behavior will go along way toward staying on a
successful path.
Autistic children can be extremely sensitive to their
environment and do not adapt well to changes. The first
step when dealing with behavioral management is to keep
their environments as consistent as possible. Keep the
behavioral rules consistent for the child across
environments. And keep your expectations and how you and
others involved deal with the child's behavior
consistent in your actions.
