Teaching reading is one of the first tasks parents take on when it comes to
teaching our children.
Ensuring that your child becomes a fluent reader and
enjoys reading is one of the most important building blocks
you can establish for the child's educational future. No
other skill carries the importance of teaching your child
reading skills. Reading is the foundation on which all other
skills build upon. Without good solid reading fundamentals
the chances that your child will struggle with other
subjects are greatly increased.
As you progress with your child's reading skills be sure to
expose them to many different types reading genre.
Children's books are a fantastic way to get your child
interested in reading and to establish basic skills, but
once your child begins to get beyond the children's books
make sure that they explore all the different types of
reading materials available to them.
One of the key's to developing a love for reading in your
child is to encourage them to explore all the different
types of reading materials available. Encourage and
challenge them to push their skills to the next level, yet
at the same time, don't get beyond what they can understand
and have frustration and boredom set in. As you progress
with teaching your child to read you will begin to see
definite interests that your child has begin to surface.
These interests can always act as a springboard for various
reading projects that you may want them to do.
Areas of nonfiction are sometimes overlooked but actually
can provide a great avenue
of interest for your child as they discover the fascinating
world around them and begin to learn about many interesting
subjects such as animals, the weather, the planets and stars
and such. So, don't rule out nonfiction readings as well.
Also be sure to include a good set of reference books in
your homeschool library. A part of any program that involves
teaching reading to your child should include teaching your
child how to use reference material and how to look up and
obtain various facts on their own.
